Microsoft demonstrated its new client-side plug-in for running server-based applications, Silverlight, at last week's worldwide partner conference.
Silverlight is a cross-browser, cross-platform plug-in that acts almost like a Java runtime environment, but which allows users to access applications written on a variety of platforms, including .Net, via their browsers.
The plug-in can also be used for video and TV since it allows up to nine streams to run simultaneously.
Brian Goldfarb, demonstrating the platform, stresses that Silverlight goes beyond media experiences. "It's about business models; it's about advertising on the Web; video is huge – and we need ways to monetise that and connect with customers in interesting ways."
