Finding a job can be a difficult and daunting task. But Bytes Communication Systems, (BCS) a division of Bytes Technology Group, is making the process just that little bit easier, by offering annual learnerships to help previously disadvantaged learners get a foot in the door, and perhaps even a chance to be offered a permanent position with the company.

Each year the Customer Services Division managers interview candidates for the coveted learnership positions. Successful incumbents are then given the chance to do training at Bytes Technology Group for four months, and then get eight months of valuable real world, practical experience at BCS.
As part of the program, the learners are divided into teams, which are then rotated between departments. Training on the product offerings of BCS is also provided.
Says Peet Lindeque, national sales manager at BCS: “Bytes as a group is always looking at new ways to help the community, and the learnerships we at Bytes Communication Systems hold are our way of contributing to this in our own way. Not only do we give previously disadvantaged learners the opportunity to gain training and experience, we have also offered a number of our learnership candidates either contract or permanent positions.”
For the 2006/2007 period, 12 learners were taken on by BCS for practical training, nine at the system support level and three from desktop level. The system support learners were then placed various positions from repair centre staff to technicians to administrative call centres. Support level learners were trained on PABX’s and how to log PABX faults, and assisted on site technicians at clients. Desktop learners were given experience assisting in logging calls and following up on calls logged.
Adds Lindeque: “All of the learners were closely monitored and were assisted where necessary to help them deal with assignments given and problems they may have been experiencing. We were so impressed by the calibre of learners that four were offered employment on a contract basis, and four more were offered permanent positions.”
These learnerships are conducted on an annual basis by BCS in Gauteng, Cape Town and Kwa-Zulu Natal.
