A shipment of DVDs, estimated to be have a value in excess of R200-million, has been seized at OR Tambo Airport – the biggest-ever such bust in South Africa and possibly the biggest in Africa.
According to IOL, the cargon included 147 containers packed with about 2,3-million movies – equivalent to the total confiscated by the Southern African Federation Against Copyright Theft (Safact) since its inception in 1999.
The shipment also incuded DVD players and fake clothing, as well as cell phones masquerading as Nokias and almost indistinguishable from the real thing.
The shipment came to South Africa from China via Dubai. Although it should have been shipped on to Nigeria, most of the DVDs would have been smuggled back to South Africa.
Apparently the DVDs contained about 650 movies each.
