Only one .africa application

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) today confirmed that there is only one applicant for the .africa Top Level Domain (TLD) – namely UniForum SA the organisation officially endorsed by the African Union.

If the application is successful UniForum, trading as Registry.Africa, will be able to allocate names such as “example.africa” to the public.

Meanwhile, DotConnectAfrica Trust has applied for the .dotafrica TLD. Should this bid be success, this registry operator will allocate names such as “example.dotafrica”.

Earlier this year, the African Union Commission (AUC) selected UniForum SA as the preferred applicant for .africa due to its commitment to  transparency and their track record of reliability, technical ability, financial stability and continental representation.

As early as the first quarter of 2013, ICANN will announce whether UniForum SA has been successful in its bid for the continent’s own TLD.

I don’t agree with this assessment. I called UniformSA to enquire about when the TLD will be available, what the format of the address would be etc, and not a single person could give me any answers.
