Julian Assange, the founder of Wikileaks and due to be extradited from the UK to Sweden to face sexual offence charges, has taken refuge in the Ecuador embassy.
Assange is an Australian national. He has been fighting extradition to Sweden in the UK, but his final appeal was rejected last week (14 June), and a 10-day extradition period is set to begin on 28 June.
Assange has also come under fire from UK and US authorities over the contents of military and diplomatic documents published on the Wikileaks site.
Assange has sought protective asylum in the Ecuador embassy in London.
The embassy has stated that it won’t interfere in the judicial processes of the UK or Sweden, but will seek the views of both countries, as well as the US.
