Uys quits as CEO of Vodacom

Pieter Uys will step down as CEO of Vodacom at the end of March 2013. He will be succeeded by Shameel Joosub.

The appointment will take effect from 1 September 2012 to ensure a smooth transition and handover.

Uys has been with Vodacom for almost 20 years, including four years as CEO.

Joosub, who joined Vodacom in 1994, is currently the chief executive of Vodafone Spain. He was previously the MD of Vodacom South Africa and a director of the Vodacom Board from 2000 until 2010 prior to his transfer to Vodafone Spain.

He holds a Bachelor of Accounting Science (Honours) from the University of South Africa and a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Southern Queensland, Australia.

Uys joined Vodacom in 1993 and led the development of the company’s industry- leading network before being appointed as MD of Vodacom South Africa in 2001. He became the chief operating officer of Vodacom Group in 2004 and led the rollout of 3G services across the group. He was appointed Vodacom Group chief executive in 2008 and led the group’s debut listing on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, achieving a shareholder return of 96% since listing.

It’s now time for change, and I will leave Vodacom confident that the business will prosper under Shameel’s leadership.”
