It is believed that VMware has filled the position of country manager, with Fred Baumhart – previously chief technology officer of Microsoft SA – tipped to be taking up the post.

VMware had not responded to a request for comment at the time of going to press.

The position was recently left vacant on the departure of Ravi Bhat, who had held the job for just seven months at the time.

Bhat took up the reins at VMware after a lengthy search following the loss of Chris Norton who was responsible for establishing VMware within the local market.

Since Bhat’s departure, he local office has been under the caretakership of Wayne Biehn, regional manager: Africa for the WECA countries.

Bhat joined VMware in October last years, some months after the departure of Chris Norton. He was previously a director of the IBM Software Group, and had spent almost 18 years with both Lotus and IBM.

VMware has grown rapidly from a server virtualisation company to one of the leaders in the new software-defined data centre space that seeks to virtualise the full range of IT infrastructure.

VMware is expanding its presence in Africa, adding an office in Kenya to its presence in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Nigeria.

The company is also actively expanding its local presence with new resources and skills to help it address the financial, telecommunications and public sector vertical markets.

In fact, the local operation plans to have grown 2,5-fold by 2017, while maintaining a 100% partner-led, -focused and -fulfilment model.
