Flights in an out of OR Tambo are still experiencing delays as technical issues continue to plague the air traffic control systems.
A statement from airport management says that ATNS experienced a technical malfunction which interrupted the communication between the air traffic controllers at the Johannesburg ATC Centre, based at the O R Tambo International Airport, and the air crew on the flights operating at the airport and the airspace in the vicinity, on Monday evening.
“This situation was recovered within 25 minutes and all operations returned to normal. During a review of the communications failure on Wednesday 7 October 2015 it became evident that further risk mitigations required to be implemented.”
This led to air traffic being termporarily limited yesterday (7 October), resulting in delays. These delays are apparently still evident today (8 October).
“ATNS is currently busy with all the required activities to normalise the situation and restore the capacity for the airport and airspace,” Airports Company states.
