Acer South Africa has announced the immediate local availability of its first notebooks preloaded with the next-generation Microsoft operating system, Windows Vista.

The first of the Acer Windows Vista notebooks available in South Africa are the TravelMate C210, TravelMate 3040, TravelMate 3270 and TravelMate 5620 series.
Between them, they cover the needs of a broad range of users, from the entry-level consumer, desktop replacement powerhouse, through to the businessperson who wants a slim notebook that can be slipped inside a briefcase.
Stephen Morony, notebook product manager at Acer SA: "Acer has become one of the first notebook vendors in the country to make a selection of Windows Vista notebooks available to its customers. We believe that our customers will enjoy the enhancements and new features that Vista brings to the Windows platform, which will in turn help them to become more productive, and also have more fun with their notebooks."
Windows Vista offers a range of innovations such as improved security and protection from harmful software with Windows Defender and User Account Control (UAC); increased stability and reliability; better search and organisation tools; and easy-to-use management and self-diagnostics.
The first four Acer Windows Vista notebooks are as follows:
* The Acer TravelMate 3270 is a high-performance notebook with a 14.1-inch screen for professional users. The notebook features Intel Core 2 Duo processors that offer processor speeds of up to 2.33GHz, up to 4Mb L2 cache, and front-side bus of up 667MHz. Users can choose between an integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 that boasts up to 224Mb of shared system memory.
* The Acer TravelMate 3040 is a slim and light notebook with a 12.1-inch screen for the mobile user who wants reliable computing wherever he or she goes. It weighs only 1,5kg, yet offers a powerful solution that is based on Intel Core 2 Duo processor with Intel EM64T support, a Mobile Intel 945GM Express chipset and an integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950 with up to 224Mb of shared memory.
* The Acer Travel 5620 is designed for professionals who are looking for a desktop replacement quality notebook, or home users who want a system that is as good for entertainment applications as it is for business. The notebook boasts a WXGA+ high-brightness 17.1-inch screen. The 5620 is built on the latest Intel Centrino Duo mobile technology, featuring processor speeds of up to 2.33 GHz, up to 4 MB L2 cache, and front-side bus of up 667 MHz. It also offers an optional Nvidia Geforce Go 7300 graphics card for users who want to run demanding home or business multimedia applications, or alternatively, an integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950 with up to 224Mb of shared memory.
* The Acer C210 is a 12.1" tablet PC with an integrated optical drive. This Tablet PC converts easily between notebook and slate modes via its slick sliding track mechanism. A built-in TravelMate biometric fingerprint reader allows quick biometric identification, enabling secure personal computing.
Acer's notebooks feature a range of connectivity options, such as WiFi certified solutions, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, Gigabit Ethernet, and 56K ITU V.92 modem connectivity. Certain models also include communications tools such as the Acer OrbiCam integrated 1.3 megapixel CMOS camera and an optional Bluetooth VoIP phone, supported by the Acer Video Conference solution for voice and video over IP communications.
The Acer Windows Vista notebooks are available for a recommended retail price of R6 999.00 including VAT for entry level to R21 999.00 for the high-end user.
