Social networks have been massively successful in the online environment – now there's a move to replicate that success in the mobile world.
But mobile operators will have to drive mobile communities and social network services, says Paddy Holahan, chief executive officer of NewBay Software.
A report by the GSM>3G Newsreel, from the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona, points out that there is a move to replicate the success of social networking sites like MySpace and Flickr in the mobile world.
However, a limiting factor will be technological – mobile social networking will require more than simply replicating on online site on WAP – in fact, developers would have to design sites specifically for the mobile environment.
Usability is that key, says Holahan, and since the mobile operator controls all aspects of the user experience, their involvement will be vital.
