The head of Symantec's security and data management business, Jeremy Burton, has resigned to take up the CEO job at business process software company Serena Software.

Burton joined Symantec as part of its acquisition of Veritas.
At Veritas, he was viewed as CEO Gary Bloom's right-hand man and considered the leading contender as his successor.
California-based Serena has been in business since 1980 and has about 800 employees worldwide.
