With an increasing need for storage solutions that protect data on mid-range SCSI and Serial Attached SCSI (SAS)-based solutions, distributor Drive Control Corporation (DCC) has introduced HP's StorageWorks Ultrium 448 Tape Drive based on second generation LTO (Linear Tape-Open) technology.

Today, SAS offers users much higher speed data transfers than previously available and coupled with HP's SAS-based Ultrium 448 offering, companies will undoubtedly benefit from optimised speed and data protection.
The Ultrium 448 features multiple models that include internal drives, external (tabletop) drives, and a 1U preconfigured rack-mount model. The new 3Gbps SAS interface allows for direct connect to SAS servers via embedded SAS controller or SAS Host Bus Adapter (HBA).
Rudi van Rensburg, HP storage product specialist at DCC, says: "If we look at the rate at which parallel SCSI speeds have increased, we have seen vast improvements every few years.  However, there are limitations to be expected and SAS is a technology that resellers can tap into, offering end users the advantage of scaling to move data at gigabit speeds. Having a storage product that interfaces with SAS storage systems will provide a distinct sales advantage."
The Ultrium 448 Tape Drive delivers a compressed storage capacity of 400Gb per data cartridge using LTO 2 media. By doubling the capacity of the current half-height HP Ultrium 232 Tape Drive, customers will now use fewer data cartridges to meet their storage needs.
Importantly, the tape drives are capable of backing up half a terabyte of storage in 2,5 hours – enhanced by HP's dynamic data rate matching feature which can match the throughput of the host. The Ultrium 448 tape drive is fully read and write compatible with all first and second-generation Ultrium drives and media.
Additional Storageworks Ultrium 448 features include:
* Half-height form factor which allows for installation into all standard 5,25-inch media bays;
* Each HP Ultrium 448 Tape Drive ships with HP StorageWorks Data Protector Express Software Single Server Edition backup/recovery and the HP StorageWorks Data Protector Express Software Bare Metal Disaster Recovery option;
* Server compatibility – SAS-based models qualified on HP ProLiant-SCSI-based models qualified on HP ProLiant, Integrity, 9000, NonStop, and AlphaServers platforms, as well as many servers from other vendors such as Dell, IBM, and Sun;
* A list of supported backup and archiving software applications from HP, CA, Veritas, Yosemite, Legato and Tivoli; and . Management and diagnostics software that include – tape drive management, performance optimisation, and troubleshooting.
