The Minister of Communications, Ivt Matsepe-Casaburri, yesterday set a deadline of November 2011 for the unbundling of the local loop.
Although industry watchers have welcomed the fact of a deadline being set, others are concerned that it could be seen to be giving Telkom an additional four year's virtual monopoly.
The Minister told Parliament yesterday that it was vital to speed unbundling of the local loop.
To this end, she had instructed ICASA (Independent Communications Authority of SA) to give urgent consideration to authorising other operators to provide similar services.
She has also instructed ICASA to allocate spectrum for a network to provide digital mobile broadcasting services.
Noticably absent from her presentation was any indication of funding, particularly for Sentech.
