Microsoft has lost a bid to make Office software a global standard, with the International Standards Organisation failing to come up with the two-thirds vote necessary to get the ISO stamp of approval.

Had it won ISO approval for the Open Office XML, it would have been recognised as the format for archiving documents and ensured that applications developed in future would have to be able to read it.
It would also have helped Microsoft compete with the OpenDocument Format from the open source community.
Microsoft is, however, confident that it will overcome some criticisms and win approval in the next round of voting.
