Tools enable migration project success

Calibrand ZA has a new range of migration tools developed to assist organisations in moving their users from legacy platforms and technologies to new platforms and applications they have identified as key parts of their IT strategy.

Traditional tools focus on the technical aspects of a migration exercise, however Calibrand's Adup (Application Desktop User Profiling) is designed to focus on both the project success and overall user competency, linked to the identification and rectification of shortfalls in employee skill levels.
Through the use of this  new toolset, Calibrand believes migration exercises can be carried out more smoothly and organisations can begin realising the benefits of their technology shifts more swiftly.
Neil Summers, MD of Calibrand  ZA, says that although change management is an area that’s of intrinsic importance to most organisations undergoing a change of platform or application suite, for the most part the change management domain relies on the expertise of specialised consultants and processes that are manual in nature.
Through a close partnership with SmartSource Change Solutions, Adup automates key elements of the process, quickly identifying skills shortfalls at a granular user level and providing trainers with the information for tailoring skills development plans that can quickly be implemented. In doing so, Adup assists companies in substantially cutting down on the time taken in negotiating the migration process and developing training and change needs analyses.
Summers says that the content housed within Adup is completely locally developed and as such, the tool is perfectly tailored to addressing the challenges faced by South African companies. “The locally-developed content is furthermore packaged into Calibrand’s award-winning assessment solution to deliver a world-class solution with local flavour.”
The benefits of performing these skills assessments at a user level cannot be overstated, he says, since each user utilises different applications in vastly different ways on a daily basis in performing their role in the organisation.
“Adup assesses each user’s skill level in these applications  and enriches the findings with the context of how applications are utilised. The upshot is the ability to provide users with only the required training, thereby saving organisations time and money.
“The end result is an ability to manage all aspects of a project to guarantee migration success and enhanced user productivity, something that we have not been able to do in the past”
Another important aspect of the change management process is understanding the user’s propensity for change.
Kathy Branquinho, MD of SmartSource Change Management Solutions adds, “the user’s willingness to change platforms and applications is also taken into account, enabling organisations to put strategies for the users in place to effectively manage the change of moving to different technologies, addressing barriers to minimise risks as well as user resistance to the change.”
Allison Singh, systems engineering manager at Novell South Africa says that the availability of Calibrand’s Adup toolset is a massive benefit to local systems integrators and IT services companies, since it finally brings them the ability to guarantee customers a problem free, smooth and speedy migration to new technologies.
“We believe that the availability of this solution strengthens the value proposition of moving to Linux and open source, and gives our channel partners another vital tool in their mission to provide customers with a simple and problem free way of moving to new platforms and applications that increase their service levels and result in cost-savings,” he says.
“We have worked closely with Calibrand in building the content for Adup and as such, will see massive benefit in the migrations from proprietary technologies and Windows desktops to SSE Linux Enterprise Desktop and open source applications.
“We believe that the availability of this solution strengthens the value proposition of moving to SUSE Linux and open source, and gives our channel partners another vital tool in their mission to provide customers with a simple and problem free way of moving to SuSE Linux Enterprise Server and Desktop with open source applications that increase their service levels and result in cost-savings,” Singh says.
