The new pay-TV licencees would like to see the period of their licences increased from the current 10 years to 20 years – or they'd like to know the reason why.
According to a report in today's Business Day, Telkom Media and the National Association of Broadcasters have both asked ICASA (Independent Communications Authority of SA) for 20-year licences to be granted.
During the initial rounds of public hearings into broadcast licencing conditions, Telkom Media asked ICASA why its initial plan to grant licences for 12 years had been reduced to 10 years. In addition, it argued that licences should be awarded for 20 years.
The longer licencing period, Telkom Media said, would allow the companies to secure the investment they needed, considering it would take about 11 years to become profitable.
