Expand Networks and BlueArc partner to optimise file services access over the WAN

Expand Networks, which provides application acceleration over the wide area network (WAN) and positioned in the Gartner’s Leaders Quadrant for WAN Optimisation Controllers 2006, and BlueArc, a player in scalable, high-performance unified network storage have announced a technology partnership.

This combination pairs the file server consolidation capabilities of BlueArc with Expand’s WAN optimisation technology and enables organisations to achieve consolidation project objectives while sustaining the application performance needed to maintain productive remote users.
Joint customers deploying highly scalable BlueArc Titan unified network storage systems and Expand WAN optimisation technologies have the opportunity to achieve the benefits of central and remote server consolidation. The partnership of BlueArc and Expand gives remote users the flexibility of access to data anywhere – without suffering performance degradation common to standard configurations.
Through this alliance, data hosted at the centre of the enterprise can be shared, accessed and modified at speeds equal to that anywhere within the network.
“Regardless of the office location or network connection, Expand and BlueArc deliver a high performance, scalable storage consolidation solution for enterprise infrastructures,” says Steve Daheb, senior vice president of marketing and business development for BlueArc.
“The combined solution allows organisations to achieve challenging financial objectives with a scalable, secure and reliable solution, as well as helping companies comply with new and emerging regulatory requirements.”
File access is crucial to the running of many businesses but, when file servers are removed from the remote office, companies often find the WAN has remarkably different characteristics to the LAN. Files encounter latency and congestion, which, in addition to the chatty nature of CIFS (Common Interface File Services), can frustrate users, slow productivity and put the success of the entire consolidation project at risk.
With its power to consolidate dozens of file servers or multiple NAS devices onto a single infrastructure and the ability to support a diverse range of users and application requirements, BlueArc’s Titan is ideal for customers seeking infrastructure consolidation. When used in combination with Expand Networks’ Compass Platform, customers can achieve true file server consolidation across their global infrastructure.
Even on small links, and with limited bandwidth in remote offices where latency levels are high, the companies’ combined offering improves performance and responsiveness for files of all sizes.
Brandon Rochat, sales director: Expand Networks Africa, adds:  “With current demands on IT budgets and resources, consolidation projects make sound economic sense, promising to reduce costs, complexity and improve productivity. BlueArc, working in tandem with the Expand Compass Platform, is an investment for organisations, as it enables WAFS consolidation and continued high performance.”
