There are very few places in the world without cell phone coverage – and one of the most inaccessible is now also covered, with the news that a Chinese mobile operator has successfully installed a transmission station on Mount Everest.

This means climbers tacking the world's most challenging peak will be able to stay in touch with their cell phones, as well the athletes performing in next year's Olympic torch relay.
China Mobile, which used yaks and porters to get equipment 6 500 metres to the transmission station site, tested the installation yesterday.
There will also be two other stations on the mountain, capable of servicing the whole Mount Everest climbing route.
