Wikipedia is to launch its own search offering. Unlike competitive search engines like Google, however, Wikia Seach will be based on a an open platform similar to the company's encyclopedia, that will let anyone add or chage entries.
Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia and spearheading the new venture, says the collaborative approach to letting volunteers improve the search technology will reduce the bottlenecks currently experienced.
The project has been available on an invitation-obnly basis for some weeks, and will be opened up to the general public on 7 January.
Wikia Search won't rely on a team of experts within the company writing ever-increasing algorithms for the search engine, but will rely on participation from users.
Wikia Search will supply the search engine, which will include a search application, search algorithm and Web crawler. It will launch with an initial 50-million to 100-million sites indexed.
