MTN South Africa has signed an agreement with IBM to partner on outsourcing some of the MTN South Africa information systems (IS) functions.
The leadership, management and some specifically identified functions will remain in-house as part of a retained organisation of IS internal resources. A contingent of the current MTN IS functions has been identified and will transfer from MTN South Africa to IBM as part of the outsourced service delivery agreement.
It is foreseen that the IS partnership will be fully operational in May 2008 and HR and business management processes are currently underway to ensure continuity and compliance in every respect of the MTN business, especially in the way it touches customer service delivery.
Although MTN SA views this partnership as a valuable strategic development, the contract between with IBM is not exclusive and MTN SA continues to engage in best-of-breed service agreements where appropriate and to the benefit of its customers.
“MTN South Africa holds quality partnerships in very high regard and is committed to excellent customer service as a core business priority. In a number of business areas, MTN South Africa partners with globally recognized best-of-breed service providers like IBM in order to gain access to best practice and international core competencies for the benefit of its own business and to enable MTN South Africa to provide world-class services to its customers,” says Tim Lowry, MD of MTN South Africa.
Mark Harris, country GM of IBM South and Central Africa, says: "The MTN agreement sets IBM apart as the leader in IT services and solutions within the telecommunications space in South Africa. MTN, also a market leader, will be able to tap into IBM's global experience in the implementation of innovative solutions similar to those of global telecoms operators.
"MTN will also leverage IBM's global intellectual property resources while transforming their IT infrastructure to increase business performance and realise business value. Our leadership in the industry will ensure MTN will retain the competitive advantage offered by leading edge innovation and improved cost efficiency.”
