Toshiba has bowed out of the high-definition wars gracefully, this week confirming that it won't develop or manufacture any more HD-DVD devices and leaving Sony's Blu-Ray as the only game in town.

The decision will help to prevent a long drawn-out "format war" like the one that plagued the early days of the video machine when VHS and Betamaz battled it out, with Betamax only backing down after a decade of wrangling.
Toshiba's president, Atsutoshi Nishida, says the company made the decision in order to help prevent confusion for customers.
Toshiba will, however, continue to support the approximately 1-million HD-DVD devices already in use around the world.
