Dell is set to close its desktop plant in Austin and lay off workers in a bid to save up to $3-billion by 2011.

The job cuts will affect about 10% of the company's workforce: 10% or 8 800 workers.
There is a possibility the PC manufacturer could restructure is financial services business as well.
Other cuts are planned as the company acts to remain competitive in the PC market.
