After a six-month delay, AMD today announced general availability of its much-vaunted Barcelona quad-core microprocessors – and South Africans will have access to all 10 versions of the platform by next week.

Imi Mosaheb, country manager of AMD South Africa confirmed that orders had been placed by its master distributors which will be fulfilled in the next few days.
"Asbis has put in an order for all flavours of Barcelona which will be processed today or tomorrow," Mosaheb says. "So the processors should be available in South Africa on Monday or Tuesday."
Mosaheb says that AMD partners have enthusiastically endorsed the new quad-core Opterons. HP, for example, is already shipping Proliant servers featuring eight of the 10 platforms.
"HP South Africa already has systems based on Barcelona available to the local market," Mosaheb says. "And Dell has indicated that it will have systems available in the first or second week of April.
"But the [Barcelona] product will be generally available through our distributors next week, and availability is plentiful," Mosaheb says.
