A security supplier has thrown down a challenge to South African businesses to scan their networks and determine if they are infected with malware – after a global study reveals that as many as 72% of companies that have an up-to-date security solution still have malware on their networks.
Panda has issued the challenge to co-incide with its launch of Infected or Not scanning tool.
South African companies that take up the challenge, and prove to be virus-free, could win R10 000.00 for a charity of their choice.
“The malware threat facing South African businesses is frightening,” says Jeremy Matthews, head of Panda Security’s sub-Saharan operations. “Traditional security solutions are no longer enough to protect users’ computers from the flood of new malware samples that appear every day.
"We want to challenge the perception amongst companies that when it comes to security breaches that ‘it won’t happen to me’. This laissez-faire attitude results in companies sidelining security so that confidential data theft and financial losses all too often the result.
“At the same time, we want to give companies participating in Infected or Not the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of the less fortunate – at no cost to themselves,” he adds.
He says Panda can detect malware that has evaded some other solutions because of its newly-developed “Collective Intelligence”, a security model based on the collection of information concerning malware from the Internet community and the automated processing of this data in new data centres.
“As the knowledge is accumulated on Panda servers and not on customers’ computers, ‘Collective Intelligence’ maximizes the detection capacity of Panda Security solutions while reducing clients’ bandwidth usage and resource consumption. This not only provides far greater security but also simplifies the protection process,” says Matthews.
Currently, Panda Security’s Collective Intelligence network comprises 4-million computers. The knowledge accumulated in the system is composed of more than 11-million malware samples, and over 100 million analysed programs.
In 2007, more than 94% of all new threats that reached PandaLabs were detected through Collective Intelligence. At present, the system has a malware knowledge base of more than a 100-million bytes.
