European Commission competition regulators today gave the go-ahead for Oracle's $8,5-billion takeover of middleware rival BEA Systems.

"The combined Oracle and BEA entity would face several strong competitors in the overall middleware market and in each of the sub-segments, such as IBM, Sun, Microsoft and SAP, and customers would therefore find sufficient alternative suppliers," the Commission says.
The merger between the two had already gained approval from US antitrust bodies in February.
