iBurst technology has received a major boost, with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) having approved it as a new standard for IEEE 802.20 – paving the way for more widespread deployment of iBurst technology around the world.
iBurst South Africa has deployed a countrywide wireless broadband network with more than 230 base stations based on the iBurst technology. The iBurst technology, currently driven commercially by the Japanese vendor Kyocera, is a mobile broadband wireless access system that has been commercially rolled out in more than 10 countries worldwide.
iBurst South Africa CEO and vice-president of the iBurst Assocation, Thami Mtshali, comments: "We are pleased that the IEEE has chosen to ratify iBurst as a global standard because the decision will drive adoption of the technology by vendors and telecom operators around the world. More widespread use of the technology will help to drive equipment prices down, to the benefit of iBurst South Africa and its broadband customers."
The IEEE's decision to accept iBurst as an 802.20 standard vindicates iBurst South Africa's decision to build a network on this technology, he adds.
It is one of the most spectrally efficient wireless broadband technologies. iBurst has very high capacity, essential for mobile broadband wireless access services, and distributes its high data rates to many mobile PC users. This is enabled by field-proven Adaptive Array Antenna (AAA) and Spatial Division Multiple Access (SDMA) technologies.
Says Mtshali: "We needed to choose a wireless broadband access technology at a time when the standards were still in flux, and picked the one we believed to offer the best price/performance. As a technology, iBurst has delivered on its promise of low-cost, always-on, and truly wireless broadband, and looks set to enjoy an even better future."
The iBurst technology was one of the first true mobile wireless broadband technologies to go into commercial service when it was launched in 2004. The nod from the IEEE follows the approval of iBurst as a standard by the American National Standards Institute and International Telecommunication Union Radiocommunication Sector.
Mtshali adds: “ICASA demonstrated tremendous foresight when granting the iBurst spectrum in South Africa several years ago. Today, over 20 countries globally have now licensed operators in the same spectrum. iBurst operators worldwide should also be commended for investing in a technology which was unproven at the time.”
