In a press release issued yesterday by AMD announcing its new vice-president and GM for EMEA, there was a gem of information buried in the last paragraph.
Tucked away at the end of the release was: "AMD also announced that Alberto Macchi, corporate vice-president of Sales and Marketing for EMEA, is leaving the company to pursue new opportunities."
When we were in Dresden the other month attending AMD's first-ever Channel Summit, the whispers were that there were some very long knives out for Macchi on the other side of the Atlantic. Seems that the rivalry between the US and EMEA contingents within AMD gets quite stormy at times and apparently the popularity of Macchi and his continued success in the region stuck in the craw of certain elements.
It's a pity to see him go – his wisdom, passion and belief in AMD and its future success will be missed.
For the record, the release was around the appointment of Emilio Ghilardi as senior vice-president and GM of AMD EMEA.
Ghilardi joins AMD from HP, where he most recently served as the vice president and general manager of HP’s EMEA Consumer Business Unit, managing a multi-billion dollar business for consumer PCs and Imaging and Printing products. Previously, Emilio was the EMEA vice president and general manager of Commercial Hardware within the Imaging and Printing Group. Emilio also served as the vice president of Consumer PC Clients in EMEA.
