Women in IT searches for 2009 bursary winners

0 comments

Bursary and mentorship forum, Women in IT has placed a call for motivations for its 2009 bursary candidates.

"Since its inception in 2005, Women in IT has awarded five bursaries to female students studying in the IT or ICT field and we are once again calling for motivations from female students entering their final year of studies in 2009," explains Celeste Whitaker, project manager at Women in IT.
All motivations received will be reviewed by a select committee and evaluated against the following criteria:
* A female student studying in the IT or ICT field and entering her finally year of study in 2009;
* An individual who is determined to succeed;
* An individual who is financially disadvantaged;
* An individual who wants to make an impact on the IT industry; and
* An individual who is a full-time student and who is not currently employed.
"Candidates who are short-listed are then required to attend an interview with the Women in IT panel. Winners will receive a bursary fund of R20 000.00 or R10 000.00 depending on the amount of subjects required for the year," explains Whitaker.
"Women in IT awarded two bursaries in 2006 worth R20 000 each to two young ladies who studied in the IT field. Both completed their studies at the end of 2006 and both have established a firm footing in the IT industry – one went on to start her own business and the other is currently completing her honours in BSc Information," says Whitaker.
"In 2007, two more bursaries worth R20 000.00 each were awarded and in 2008, three further bursaries were given out. It is our intention in 2009 to increase the number of bursaries to five, depending on the availability of funding," says Whitaker.
Interested parties can log onto the Women in IT website, www.womeninit.co.za, to find out more about the bursary programme. The deadline for submissions is 30 September 2008 and winners will be announced by 31 November 2008.
