Johnson Controls facilitates ‘Green Olympics’

Johnson Controls, an organisation that brings ingenuity to the places where people live, work and travel is helping to create safe and sustainable environments at many of the Beijing 2008 Olympic venues and related structures. Innovative ice thermal storage technology, environmentally friendly refrigerant solutions, YORK centrifugal chillers and air handling units, as well as their flagship Metasys building management systems, are all contributing to reduce the energy footprint of the world's most spectacular sporting event.

Green building solutions provided by Johnson Controls have been applied to 18 Olympic stadiums and supporting facilities. YORK Chillers and air handling units can be found in:

* National Indoor Stadium (Turtle's back)
* CCTV New Headquarters Building
* Beijing Olympic Tower (China aero geophysical survey & remote sensing centre)
* Beijing International Airport T3
* National Convention Center
* Beijing Workers' Gymnasium
* Beijing University of Aeronautics & Astronautics Gymnasium Qingdao Olympic
* Sailing Center Tianjin Olympic Games Organizing Committee Office Building
* Shanghai Stadium.
According to Neil Cameron, Systems and Service Divisional manager, Johnson Controls South Africa, "On the local front, Johnson Controls customers can expect the best value in technology. They can have the satisfaction that the quality they get internationally will be available locally."
At the National Stadium ("Bird's Nest") Johnson Controls has enabled the annual operation cost to be reduced by over 15% by using the Johnson Controls advanced YORK centrifugal chiller with R134A refrigerant which utilises advanced ice storage technology and low temperature ice water stored at night to provide cooling during the day, while effectively reducing energy needs at night.
The industry-leading Metasys building management system allows building operators access and control via the internet, PDA's and mobile devices anywhere in the world. Metasys integrates building systems such as lighting, access, and fire/safety systems to ensure minimum energy costs and has been utilised at the following venues:
* Laoshan Velodrome Beijing Olympic Green
* Tennis Court Peking University Gymnasium Beijing University of Technology
* Gymnasium Beijing Olympic Park Central Zone Beijing Olympic Forest Park
* Tianjin Olympic Center Stadium.
