At least 100 000 notebook computers may be affected around the world as Sony reports more than 40 incidences of its battery packs overheating and in some cases bursting into flame.

The recall, which is being made voluntarily by Sony, is for a batch of 2.15Ah lithium-ion cell batteries made in Japan and sold worldwide in HP, Dell and Toshiba notebooks.
The batteries would all be been produced between October 2004 and June 2005. There have been no incidences reported for batteries made after 2006.
