Lyndall Shope-Mafole has resigned as director-general of the department of communication with immediate effect. She is reportedly going to assume a political role within the Congress of the People (Cope).
Shope-Mafole had a contract until 2010, but the Department of Communications says the two parties agreed to shorten it.
Business Day reports that Shope-Mafole claims to be among the top 12 decision-makers within Cope, with particular responsibility for international affairs.
She plans to work with Cope to increase focus on ICT, which she believes is a means of boosting education and economic development.
