While the debate and uncertainty around WiMax licensing continues in South Africa, the technology is advancing in the rest of the world – with operators and governments under even more pressure to invest in the rollout of wireless broadband in order to ensure a rapid penetration of access to connectivity and Web content.

Intel and Huawei have announced that a new WiMax IOT (Interoperability Testing) Lab has statred operations in Beijing. Designed and built jointly by the two companies, the completion of this project represents another milestone in the ongoing collaborative efforts to boost the speed of interoperability and delivery of commercial-ready WiMax devices throughout the global WiMax industry.
Based on both WiMax infrastructure and terminal products provided by Huawei and Intel respectively, the lab replicates a real end-to-end test environment.
This environment helps assure comprehensive, commercially operable, mature and rapidly deployable WiMAX solutions for operators around the world. Specifically, Huawei provided its industry-leading infrastructure equipment including WiMax BS (Base Station) DBS3900 which has gained Wave2 certification from the WiMax Forum, ASN-GW (Access Service Node Gateway) and some CSN equipment.
Intel also provided a wide variety of terminals embedded with its WiMax chipset, including the Intel WiMax/Wi-Fi Link 5050 Series adapter, available today in Intel processor-based notebooks and netbooks, as well as IOT and performance testing equipments for the IOT lab.
"Ensuring interoperability between infrastructure equipment and end-user devices is key to delivering highly-mature and rapidly-deployable solutions," says Sriram Siswanathan, vice-president of Intel Capital and GM of the WiMax Program Office at Intel. "Using our chipset technology and working together with Huawei, Intel is a dedicated ally in providing market ready, fully tested and interoperable WiMax-enabled devices."
Zhao Ming, president of Huawei CDMA & WiMax Product Line, adds: "We embarked on an open cooperation strategy for WiMax development with Intel back in 2005. Since then Huawei and Intel have consistently strengthened our strategic relationship to conduct a very successful series of WiMAX related cooperative ventures over the subsequent three year.
"The systematic and rigorous testing we'll be jointly conducting in our new Beijing WiMax IOT lab will further advance both companies' end-to-end WiMax solution delivery abilities and, in turn, expedite the development of WiMax market segments for operators worldwide."
