Microsoft will close the Encarta online encyclopaedia later this year.

The resource, which was originally launched in 1993 as a CD, currently runs as an online encyclopaedia, available by subscription.
However, the software company has announced that it will shut down the site on 31 October in most of the world, with the Japanese site to close in December.
The market has changed quickly over the last few years, with products like Encarta first putting pressure on printed encyclopaedias, and then coming under pressure themselves from products like Wikipedia and other online resources.
