SMC Networks, a global provider of LAN hardware and broadband connectivity devices, has announced the launch of two new rack-mountable Fast Ethernet switches for the small-to-medium sized business market.
The EZ Switch 10/100 SMC-EZ1024DT and SMC-EZ1016DT help to reduce energy bills by saving up to 21% of power consumption under full traffic load and up to 59% when networked PCs are switched off, and are available to the local market through SMC Networks South Africa.
The SMC-EZ1016DT and SMC-EZ1024DT are the latest 16 and 24 port Fast Ethernet switches from SMC to feature the company’s proprietary intelligent ‘Green Saving’ algorithms – saving on costs as well as carbon emissions – that detect both link status and cable distance to save power:
* Both the SMC-EZ1016DT and SMC-EZ1024DT are able to auto-detect link status and automatically cut off power at a given port during periods when unconnected or a PC is turned off.
* After detecting an incoming signal, the switches wake up from power saving mode and operate in normal mode. Performance and stability are completely unaffected.
“These power-saving solutions represent a very worthwhile and cost effective investment for businesses, specifically those within the small-to-medium segment of the market. The emphasis for any operation today is on cost saving and reduction on total cost of investment. SMC Networks has an established offering that enables users to extract maximum benefit from eco-friendly, next generation networking switch technology,” says Paul Luff, country manager, SMC Networks South Africa.
“Features of these plug-and-play solutions include buffered “store-and-forward” architecture to prevent propagation of bad packets, half- and full-duplex flow control to prevent packet loss under heavy loading and auto-negotiation for automatic selection of speed and operating mode, amongst others,” adds Luff.
SMC Green Saving Switches also actively detect the presence of a shorter cable and determine the appropriate power level based on cable length, meaning less power consumption when the link distance is shorter. If cable length is less than 20 meters, each SMC Green Saving Switch can save up to 12% on power used.
Thierry Gonon, GM: EMEA at SMC Networks, comments: “SMC’s Green Saving Technology offers small businesses very practical and simple ways to save costs and cut carbon emissions. By asking users to turn off their PCs when they are not being used, and by reducing unnecessary cabling in the office, small businesses can take advantage of these new switches to further reduce their IT costs and take another step towards improving their green IT credentials.”
