The US Department of Justice has approved Oracle's proposed acquisition of Sun Microsystems, which can go ahead as soon as other conditions are met, including clearance by the European Commission.

Oracle first made an offer to buy Sun for $9,50 per share in April, a deal which was approved by shareholders on 16 June.
The deal values Sun at about $7,4-billion.
The Silicon Valley-based hardware and software vendor is expected to contribute about $1,5-billion to Oracle's profits in the first year of operation, rising to $2-billion in the secnod year.
