Altech won't be using its hard-won I-ECNS licence to roll out a national network in South Africa, but it is looking at smaller, self-contained projects to implement.

CEO Craig Venter, who points out that the company is becoming the major network provider in East Africa, told media today that it won't be looking to go national in South Africa.
He says that the protracted fight the organisation put up in order to force the regulator and the minister to honour their commitments to e-ECNS licences was made largely on principle.
"But yes, we are going to use the licence," he says.
"We won't be building a national network. There are already existing players in there, and there is still no frequency spectrum.
"However, we will look at niche opportunities such as gated communities and corporate office parks.
"Yes, we will be playing a role."
