Engine Room, a Johannesburg-based print shop, has bought a Xerox 8000AP digital colour press from Bytes Document Solutions, authorised Xerox distributor to 24 sub-Saharan countries.
The print company has replaced an older Xerox 5252 digital colour press for greater printing speeds that lead to quicker job turnaround times.
“It’s a pure speed issue,” says Craig Myburgh, partner at Engine Room. “The 8000AP is a workhorse that’s night and day compared with the old machine. It can offer the 24- to 48-hour turnarounds that customers demand on digital jobs and that’s what I needed from it. The wear and tear is reduced; any problems we had with the old machine have been rectified on the 8000AP; there’s a vast improvement in reliability, and it really meets the requirement from digital: to offer complete freedom on short runs through the rapid turnaround of high-quality products.”
Engine Room primarily serves the printing needs of the local medical industry where it enjoys significant market penetration, but it also services the financial services market, advertising agencies and communications companies with a variety of products including brochures, personalised vouchers, and business cards. The company operates a design studio for customers and offers digital printing, variable data printing, litho and wide format posters.
It runs a range of digital, wide format and litho equipment including the Xerox 8000AP, the Xerox DocuColor 5252 which it is phasing out and will resell, and a Xerox 7142 wide format machine.
“Engine Room’s upgrade to the 8000AP gives the company the ability to turn digital jobs around faster and more reliably than ever before,” says Anthony Oeschger, production solutions executive, Production Systems Group at Bytes Document Solutions. “They’re also looking to grow the volume of images printed each month from 80 000 as the weak economy erodes margins and places increasing emphasis on service delivery.
Myburgh viewed a demonstration of the 8000AP at Drupa, the international print exhibition held in Germany last year.
“I was already interested in the machine but I wanted to see it in operation,” he says, “and I was fortunate to be invited to the exhibition by Bytes Document Solutions.”
Following installation, his employees required only familiarisation and no training on the new press since they were accustomed to operating Xerox equipment.
“We simply plugged it in and it began working,” he says.
Engine Room has a standard maintenance and support contract with Bytes Document Solutions for the 8000AP with a four-hour service level agreement.
“I haven’t had any major problems with the machine and Bytes has always been very responsive,” he says.
