New York attorney general Andrew Cuomo has filed an anti-trust lawsuit against Intel, following similar cases on the go in Europe and Asia. This is the first anti-trust lawsuit Intel has faced in the US this decade.
Intel is currently appealing a massive $1,45-billion fine from the European Commission, levied for antitrust violations. It also faces a lawsuit by AMD and is under investigation by the Federal Trade Commission.
Cuomo, in filing his suit, says the chip giant may have used threats, coercion, fines and bullying to maintain its leading position in the market – and, with an 80% market share, had the clout to do so.
He wants to show not only that AMD could have sold more chips, but that the market could have benefited from less expensive and more powerful computers.
