Just as the local IT industry was celebrating coming out of recession without any major casualties, comes the news that the country's largest independent retail chain has filed for liquidation.
Sources indicate that Computer Corporation, which on its website lists 60 outlets throughout the region, filed for liquidation last Friday.
The company reportedly closed down 14 fanchises last year, but was looking to counter this with the opening of a superstore in Fourways. The superstore was slated to launch in November last year but, to date, its doors remain unopened.
Vendors who are known to have signed up to a "store within a store" concept at Fourways include Toshiba, Acer and Lexmark.
Suppliers to the retailer are believed to be owed millions of rands, with one major distributor allegedly owed around R10-million.
At the time of going to press, there has been no official communication from the retailer and, while its website still appears to be active, attempts to contact it proved fruitless.
