South African companies are largely unaware of whether they are the registered owners of their own domain names, with 77% of businesses having never checked. And, of those that have checked, more than 10% have found that the registered owner isn't the company.
In most cases where the company isn't registered as the owner, it's the ISP that holds the domain (6,7%), which could cause problems down the line should a company wish to move to another ISP, says Vika Mpisane, GM of ZADNA, the South African domain name authority.
And, where the ownership of the domain is registered with another party, almost half of organisations (45%) are unhappy with the situation, with 29% aware of the potenital consequencies.
Other registered owners are shown to be Webmasters (1,5%), an employee of the company (1%) and other third parties (1%).
