KID appoints Johann van der Walt as head of MDM division

Knowledge Integration Dynamics (KID), the data-related consulting, professional services and technologies group, has appointed Johann van der Walt to head up its burgeoning master data management (MDM) division.

Van der Walt has in excess of 17 years’ global experience in the MDM and related fields, primarily developing MDM programmes for large multinational firms.
He joins from Ixia Consulting where he was the inland regional manager and principal SAP NetWeaver MDM consultant, managing national and multinational services, infrastructure and FMCG accounts.
“There is a rapidly growing opportunity to deliver master data solutions in the South African market as companies recognise the need for it and there is a dire skills shortage,” says Julian Field, marketing director at KID.
“Many of the industry’s largest vendors don’t have the requisite consulting skills in the country. With someone of Johann’s calibre and standing in the industry, along with the team we have to bolster that, we can happily meet their needs and more.”
Van der Walt says master data is only emerging in South Africa because many companies still believe it is a sub-function of each business unit. Only the more progressive businesses, he says, are diverting specific budgets for the master data component of projects.
Since joining KID, he and his team have been building a master data implementation framework, employing the company’s traditional strengths in data cleansing, ETL (extraction, transformation, and loading), profiling, exploration, dashboards, scorecards and data quality.
“The traditional mergers and acquisitions are driving master data, but increasingly we’re seeing consolidation and regulation underpinning these projects,” says Van der Walt.
“My passion is improving the quality of master data in businesses and bringing it to fruition more rapidly. You don’t need two years for a master data project.
"If the business has the appetite, as opposed to a mandate, they can achieve their business goals rapidly and effectively and then concentrate on building on the value derived from their systems.”
Van der Walt’s experience includes 14 years at Unilever, from 1996 to 2010, where he deployed common business processes on a common and consolidated ECC platform to multiple African, Middle Eastern and Asian countries over a five-year period.
He completed the assessment, design, development and rollout to 14 of 34 countries, before he advanced his career to Ixia.
