One of the key outcomes identified by the Department of Communications for the development of the South African ICT industry is a strong focus on doing business in Africa.
While some are sceptical about this country's ability to compete on the international stage, the consensus at Friday's meeting between government and industry is that we are already on track to do so.
Minister of Communications Roy Padayachie says the rest of Africa is keen to do business with South African companies.
"The opportunities are bigger that just the South African market," he says. "The African market should not be a field just for US and European companies to participate in – it should be a field for Soutgh African companies as well.
"We must take the opportunities. And the state is willing to assist companies looking to do business in Africa."
Companies like Altech, Dimension Data and Multichoice agreed with the Minister about African opportunities, saying they are already well represented north of the Limpopo.
