G4S, the world’s leading international security solutions group, has employed OmniPCX Office converged communications infrastructure from Bytes Connect in support of its move to IP telephony in South Africa

Inter-branch cellular telephony is a costly business, and one which IP telephony promises to resolve.
“IP telephony solutions, however, require up-to-date technology infrastructure to function best, which is why G4S went out to tender for a solution that could support the new systems and fulfill existing business needs, while providing additional benefits,” says Roedi Brits, Bytes Connect account manager to G4S.
G4S has enormous depth and global breadth of experience and knowledge in logistics, technology, risk consultancy, project management and in managing the world’s largest force of security personnel across 120 countries.
It draws on that extensive pool to enable its customers to protect their critical assets, generate extra revenue, reduce costs and deliver an enhanced service to their customers. This is why it needs the best internal solutions to maximise customer service delivery.
The Alcatel-Lucent OmniPCX Office solution from Bytes Connect is a pre-configured server that allows small and medium businesses to enjoy enterprise-class business telephony. It is easy to deploy and manage and is cost-effective while improving customer service, enhancing business operations, and reducing operational risk.
It also meshes seamlessly with Alcatel-Lucent Extended Communication Server, and together the two systems provide advanced telephony services, secure high-speed Internet and e-mail, and shared access to contacts, calendars and documents to employees in the office, on the road, or working from home.
OmniPCX Office also supports call centre, soft phone and third-party XML applications.
Bytes Connect has a national footprint, with highly trained and experienced technical and support personnel within a short radius of G4S’s national offices, which means the business can offer unparalleled response times. It also maintains a 24-hour call centre for issue logging and first line support.
G4S is using Huge Telecoms to implement and maintain the IP telephony solution, and Huge Telecoms will also roll out a hosted management system capturing all call records for G4S’s various branches and report on usage on a monthly basis.
Bytes Connect's OmniPCX will integrate directly into that and feed the system with the information it requires.
After a national survey of its existing infrastructure, it was determined that 15 of G4S’s branches needed switchboard and related infrastructure to be replaced immediately, while some required cabling.
Brits says G4S will investigate an MPLS/UC (multi-protocol label switching/unified communication) roll-out in the near future. This is a technology that the Alcatel-Lucent OmniPCX Office solution supports seamlessly, without the need for any additional gateway equipment.
