Port Elizabeth has become the first city in the Eastern Cape to sign up for the global trend of group buying, going live with Groupon's MyCityDeal PE.
The concept of group buying on the Web is less than a year old in South Africa. It gives vendors of goods and services, ranging from restaurants to hotels, spas, kitesurfing schools and retailers, a way to reach new customers to try a new offering at a massive discount – usually betwee 50% to 90% of the normal price.
Groupon subscribers, in turn, get to find deals and try out new products in their home city. Deals are advertised through social media channels like Facebook and Twitter as well as through a daily newsletter.
The first deal being offered in PE is a to get two tickets to watch the pantomime troupe Mummenschanz perform live at the PE Opera House for R149.00.
“Port Elizabeth has a lot of great places to go and things to do – but often locals and tourists just don’t know about them," says Daniel Guasco, CEO of Groupon SA. "With Groupon’s MyCityDeal PE operation, our salespeople are there on the ground in Greenacres, or St Georges Park, or the Mandela Art Museum or on the beach at Summerstrand. digging up the best of the best.
"MyCityDeal PE will open up people’s eyes to the fact that they live in one of the most relaxed, most beautiful places in SA with a sophisticated lifestyle."
