Information available to teachers from both the Department of Basic Education and the Education Labour Relations Council (ELRC) indicates that the Teacher Laptop Intiative is on track but, amid reports that the campaign in faltering, it was telling that neither the Minister nor the Director General of Basic Education referred to it in their budget speeches earlier this month.

The Times reports that new ways of financing the project are being discussed with Treasury as up to 40% of teachers applying to buy laptops under the scheme have failed to access the necessary credit.
The Teacher Laptop Initiative is a scheme whereby educators can purchase approved laptops from accredited suppliers and will then receive a monthly allowance to cover the cost of paying it off and staying online.
However, it is reported that many teachers are not able to buy the computers on credit due to poor credit-worthiness.
