The Department of Communications will work with the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) and Steel and Engineering Industry Federation of SA (SEIFSA) to explore new business opportunities opened up by the upcoming implementation of the digital terrestrial broadcasting in South Africa.

The three parties have committed to work together by establishing a task team to explore all the identified opportunities in the sector.

This follows a consultative meeting on progress in the implementation of the new technology, as well as the role it can play in the revitalisation of the South African electronics and related components industry.

The meeting identified new opportunities in the information & communication technology (ICT) industry, especially the electronics sub-sector. These include the possibility of manufacturing digital antennas, transmission equipment, cables and smart meters as applications for water, energy and other utilities management as well as software development and content applications.
