With the rand approaching levels last seen in May 2010 – breaching the psychologically-significant level of R8.00 against the dollar – local notebook retailers are starting to predict that laptops could jump in price by as much as 15% over the next few weeks.

Christopher Riley, MD of The Notebook Company, says he is already factoring in an “unavoidable price increase”.

“It is just a matter of how much, but I predict a 15% increase on all replacement stock within a few weeks, and possibly within the next few days,” he says.

“If the rand consistently breaches the R8.00 to the dollar  mark – which it has done already – prices could increase even more and this is going to potentially have a damper on notebook sales for the remainder of the year as consumers are still suffering from high levels of indebtedness – and companies are still being cautious about capital expenses.”
