The successful incumbent will be responsible for starting up a Macadamia Breeding programme for both fruiting scions and rootstock selections. Additional responsibilities will be giving input into the Avocado fruiting scion and rootstock breeding programme; and assisting Westfalia Fruit in exploring and harnessing potential molecular (biotech) tools to expedite the breeding and selection process. Knowledge of traditional breeding (open pollination) would be beneficial. The incumbent requires the ability to work independently and to manage his/her own research budget. The incumbent must have good communication skills and be able to communicate with international researchers across the word to advance research output. The incumbent must be willing to travel both locally and internationally.

Qualifications/Experience:

  • A PhD degree in (Tree) Breeding and/or Botany/Horticultural Science
  • At least 3 Years’ post graduate experience in a breeding position (preferably fruit tree)

Knowledge:

  • Expert knowledge of research methodology
  • Expert knowledge of traditional (fruit) tree breeding
  • Expert knowledge of molecular assisted breeding/biotechnology
  • Sound knowledge of staff management
  • Willing to travel (in South Africa and internationally)

Skills:

  • Computer literacy: MS Office – full package (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Statistical packages
  • Spanish/Portuguese/Mandarin: conversational would be an advantage
