Portfolio Construction and Dealing

Remuneration: Market related – Highly negotiable – Intermediate to Senior level

The successful candidate will join a team of highly skilled investment professionals in managing client investment portfolios to generate exceptional investment outcomes.

The role involves optimally implementing the teams investment strategies and views across portfolios – specifically with regards to the timing, efficiency, costs and consistency of implementation.

The primary responsibilities of the role are:

  • Optimal implementation of the Fixed Income Investment strategies and views across portfolios –

specifically with regards to timing, efficiency, trading costs and consistency

  • Portfolio construction of fixed income portfolios ensuring funds are aligned to models
  • Monitoring daily cash flows and modelling the funds affected
  • Liaising with business analysts in respect of model/benchmark maintenance, system upgrades,

discrepancies and amendments

  • Liaise with operation’s team with respect to the transition of fixed income instruments, set up of portfolios

and realignment to models

  • Production of various Fixed Income reports for the Fixed Income team for example credit exposures,

interest rate risk exposure, etc.

  • Liaising with other related areas within the business including:

o Operations regarding static data, trade queries, booking and settlement issues
o Business Support, to ensure that instrument data integrity, including accurate pricing and
correct static data, is maintained
o Compliance and any other areas as required

  • Trade execution/dealing and the bookover of the full spectrum of Fixed Income products:

o Cash: placing funds on call, treasury bills, NCD’s, corporate CP and floating rate notes in the
primary and secondary markets
o Bonds: government bonds, parastatal bonds, corporate bonds and inflation linked bonds
o Derivatives: fixed income derivatives (e.g. futures, options and swaps) in both the primary and
secondary markets.

  • Affecting the purchase and sales of international fund holdings as well as the associated foreign

exchange transactions would form part of the dealing responsibilities

  • Obtaining best execution for all trades timeously as well as capturing these in the front office system
  • Maintaining counterparty relationships
  • Comply with all dealing and trading related policies, amongst others
  • Acting as liaison between Portfolio managers and the marketplace and providing feedback

concerning market developments and the timing of transactions

  • Input into the investment decision making process from all members of the fixed income team is

encouraged
o This would include assistance with data collection and model maintenance within the team
o Providing input to client presentations
o Identifying potential market opportunities

Basic job requirements

  • Minimum 2/3 years of Fixed Income Portfolio Construction experience within a Fixed Income team or

similar financial institution.

  • Dealing experience within a fixed income team or similar role on either the buy or sell-side would be beneficial.

  • Adept at numerical work, building spreadsheets and organizing data

  • Some programming ability would be beneficial
  • Able to work as part of a team, to tight deadlines with accuracy under pressure
  • Familiarity with all fixed income securities
  • Studying towards CFA/FRM or open to studying towards CFA (CFA level 1 would be highly

advantageous)

  • RE5 exam would be beneficial
