Dear reader

Africa was in the spotlight this week: the continent is investing more than ever in information and communications technology (ICT) infrastructure, opening up opportunities for value-added service providers. There’s also been a call for African countries to start trading and investing in one another to drive growth, rather than looking to external forces.

With Africa and infrastructure top of mind, finalists for the hotly-contended AfricaCom awards have been announced, with the winners due to be named on 12 November.

As the world digested the news that HP is to split into two separate companies, and figured out what this means for the industry, Symantec announced that it will split into two as well – one company looking after security and the other focusing on storage.

The big event this week was VMworld 2014 in Barcelona, where VMware outlined where it believes virtualisation, cloud computing, end user computing and the software-defined data centre are headed in the future.

Until next week,
